Ogoun Bhalin'dio

Hello group.

In the past couple of weeks I have been pulling Ogoun Bhalin'dio / 5 of Cups in my readings. This week I asked the Lwas: "With whom should I work this week?" and received this card again.

I did the offering suggested in the book, but since I can't find much information about this specific Ogoun I didn't know what else to do.

Let me know if you know of any other offerings appropriate for this Lwa, and what is your interpretation/ intuition of this card for me.

Blessings,
Karuna

Greetings all,
I just purchased this deck. Has anyone done the rituals listed in the back? How safe is it to draw a veve without having been properly introduced to the loa? Any thoughts or suggestions on getting started would be much appreciated

Legba, please open the way!

Just an honoring of Legba, whom I love!

Here's something I wrote about him to explain him to someone who mistakenly thought he was "the devil." I hope I did him honor:

Legba is the name of one of the main Loa (or Lwa)
of the African-American spiritual pantheon.
(I understand a Loa as not exactly a "deity,"
but more an embodiment of an archetype from the
collective consciousness. A Loa can also be an
ancestor who is especially honored and remembered,
and contacted frequently in the present generation
for advice and guidance and teachings.)

Legba is one of the principal and most revered
Loa. Back in Africa (West Africa, most likely
Dahomey...tribally, the Mahis, the Amines, the Adjas,
the Foulas, the Sousous, the Haousas), he was
known as Elegba (or Alegba), a great solar and phallic deity.
He was shown young and strong! (In Dahomey, even
today, the image of Alegba, made of clay, stands or
sits before the entrance to many villages. Sometimes
the image is nothing more than a mound or column
of earth, symbolic in its "rise.") Elegba is life,
uncontained and rising toward the sun.

In the Americas, however, he has become an old man
who uses a crutch. Yet he is still powerful. He
is saluted before any of the other Loa are saluted.
He is the one who connects the inner world with
the outer world. One could also say he is a messenger
between humans and the powers of Nature. He is called
"The Opener of the Way" and has been associated with
St. Peter, because he holds the "keys to the kingdom."
He is also a linguist and a master of language...which is
another kind of "key." And coincidently, he holds
the keys to the musical language, too.

He is the guardian of the gate, the crossroads,
and the highway. He is a divine trickster who is
both feared and loved. His "mischief" is often
in the realm of sex, and indeed, his sexual prowess
is legendary. In Louisiana, he is known as
"Papa Lebat." Perhaps that stick he carries that
helps him to walk is symbolic of the power to make
magic, with his "wand"--and that "wand" can be
a sexual or a musical instrument!

Since the white slave-owners felt that the original
spiritual beliefs of their black slaves were
"of the devil," they referred to Legba as the Devil.
The blacks were made to also refer to him as the
Devil, but they continued to see in him aspects
of goodness. (If you would like to read my essay
about the Sacred Clown and the Trickster in spirituality,
please ask me and I will send it to you.)

One of the aspects of goodness of Legba was that
of helping the slaves to survive. As Luisah Teish
writes in her book "Jambalaya,"

"Because they were under constant surveillance
by the overseer, the master, and a hostile government,
the art of deception became a virtue and magical works
came to be called 'tricks.'

"'Turning the trick' must be understood in its own context.
The African God Elegba was always an important energizing
force. All magic began and ended with him. As messenger
of the gods, he could be enticed .... to alter the course
of fate by delivering a message different from the original
one sent. In the African view, trickery had been used
in procuring the slaves; therefore trickery was necessary
to survive.

"There are many things about nature and human nature that
defy the rigors of Western logic. We do not know what fire
and electricity are, really. Yet we know that they work
and we learn more about them only by using their power.
Fire is one of nature's tricks. And even those things
we are beginning to comprehend, such as the powers of the
subconscious mind, still refuse to be reduced to test-
tube operations. Our minds are a trick of nature.

"Until recently, African religions have been described
by people who sought to suppress their practice. Because
the African perspective on life, nature, and worship are
in conflict with the rigidity of Christianity and the
materialistic-mechanistic world view, false images have
been fostered and nonapplicable concepts have been imposed
on the African point of view. As a result, this tradition
is often seen as a random collection of foolish super-
stitions and 'devil worship.'

"Just as Jung has given another meaning to the word
'coincidence' by discussing the concept of synchronicity,
it is time the word 'superstition' was redefined.

"After examining the 'superstitions' of the black U.S.
South in the light of African magic, I now define 'superstition'
as a belief or practice whose origin and context has been
lost to us and/or is in conflict with the beliefs of
the dominating culture.

"Christianity usually views the world as a battle
between differing and hostile forces. All good is posited
in God, and all evil in the devil. THE AFRICANS HAD
NO DEVIL."

You can see some depictions of Legba in the movie
"Crossroads" and also see a healing ritual done for Legba
to "open the way" in the movie by Talking Head's
David Byrne, called "True Stories."

Caribbean Energies

I was looking at some people's profiles and found that they have visited the Caribbean. I have not done so, yet, in THIS life....but I would love to!

For those who have gone to the Caribbean: Have you sensed those beautiful mystical energies from the Lwas and the other spirits? Have you had feelings of past lives there, in the Caribbean.........?

And perhaps, do you have any suggestions for places to go, to feel these mystic energies? Any thoughts on the Caribbean (whether you've gone in THIS life, or not) are welcome....

New to the 'New Orleans Voodoo Tarot'

I have been looking at this deck for over a year, and recently bought it after much deliberation about whether it was right for me or not. I am very attracted to the at-style of the illustrations, but at the moment, am very new to both the deck and voodoo in general - so finding this place was a very nice surprise.

I am going to try and study the cards, one by one, in the hope of understanding them the best that I can. I wrote this post because I just wanted to say hello to you all and hoped that you might not mind my tagging along on your journey with this tarot pack. Look forward to meeting you all. I am very excited about the future with this particular tarot,

Kind Regards and Best wishes to you all,

If you'd like to hear her speak, you can go to:

http://kpfa.org/1pro_bio/1b_visio.htm

There are 2 shows: February 23, 2006 (right after Katrina), and March 2, 2006 (with Stephen Karcher, I Ching teacher). You can listen to them online.

If you want to buy CDs/tapes of the shows, you can go to Caroline Casey's site, "Coyote Network News"--

Go to the "store" and you can buy them for $10.

BTW, if you are interested in Astrology, you may find Caroline Casey's material (based on her book "Making the Gods Work for You") interesting. She is the only astrologer that I know of, who works with the African diaspora gods/goddesses/loas/orishas, etc.

Hey Everyone---

I may not have mentioned it on here,
please forgive me for not being more active
on the page, but I've been doing a lot of studying lately...

Anyway, I have been working with Reiki (I teach Reiki)
and recently have been doing some interesting work
with Reiki and Vodou (specifically with this tarot deck
and the spirits represented by it)

So what I was wanting to know is, would people be
interested in doing a workshop on Reiki and Vodou?

I am thinking about doing one in New York and one
in New Orleans.

Let me know.

Ashe!

The first card I drew when I started doing daily card drawings (to work with and try to get more familiar with the cards, and to visualize/meditate with the spirits)
I drew Oshun.

Here are my thoughts--unedited from my journal.
Aesthetically, I love the card...it's beautiful.
She's beautiful, gazing with longing, frank, unabashed.
No girlish hiding behind the fan, but almost daring you
to come over. It's flirtatious, but bold. All woman.
Peacock represents sexual attraction, pride in one's
appearance, beauty. This feels like it's at a party or a dance
that I would want to be at.
Sallie says in Vodou Visions:
She flirts in the surface of the mirror, but if you entice her to respond
to you, her powerful waters come flowing from deep within."
The night I drew it, there were watery emotions all around me, so it
seemed to work out quite literally. I prayed to her
to find ways to deepen connections, and to deepen my relevance
to others. I asked to be an inspiration to others, and to find it myself.

My Take on the Aces

Have been making notes in a 'notebook' this morning, and found it enlightening.

But I wanted to bring them here and discuss them with you guys to make sure that I have got the right handle on the cards.

In this study, the aces seemed to open up much more in a 'foursome' than they do when I pick a card, one at a time, randomly.

The 'ones' are as follows -

Damballah Wedo, who is a serpent of air

Ayida Wedo, a serpent of water, who is married to Damballah and is shown in union with a person.

Damballah la Flambeau, who is a serpent of fire.

And from the religion of Santeria, Oludumare, who is a spirit of earth.

All four are linked to the first vessel of the Tree of Life in Kabballah, Kether.

All four are energy in it's purest. Pure fire. Pure air. Pure water. And pure earth. In this, as an example, I need to remember that in pure fire, there is little room for emotion. Each element is focused and is a pure influence. Each one creates. Their attention is not wavered.

I have always seen the number 'one' as a new beginning, so it seems appropriate, also, that we have a serpent or snake to stand for three of the aces. A snake sheds it's skin. This shedding could be seen as re-birth or some kind of healing or new start, which is uncompromised by the burdens of past influence any longer.

Damballah la Flambeau is pure fire. He is a flame. He is active and masculine energy. And this card lets you know that what he has got, is available for you to use. However, in the wrong position in a spread, as opposition, you might be up against a bumpy ride, for he can be strong and antagonistic.

I see him as will power and drive. He might, at worst, represent anger and rage, if his energy is used inappropriately. He might be raw ambition.

Fire has always had sexual connotations for me. And so does the serpent. Here, I see his as sex, without love. He is the thrust. He is a f***, without emotion.

Ayida Wedo is pure water. In what we know about the elements, she is therefore pure emotion and creativity. I have always seen the 'Ace of Cups' in traditional tarot to be about pure emotion without a background plot. May that be laughter, tears, tenderness or hate. And here, in it's purest form, the snake mounts the dancer in the same way as emotion can take us over. We can just cry hysterically. Or scream with laughter. It is the laugh or the tear, and not necessarily what provoked it.
Even though each element is pure in the cards, in this one, it does join with the human. Or at least, it shows a human at a point where she and emotion/water become one. In that sense, even though love is often something that develops further into the suit [usually, in traditional Waite-type tarot], this card 'could' indicate the feeling or rush of love that one person has for another, whether it is reciprocated or not. It might not be foolish then, to also think of this card as a new beginning in the realms of relationships, as much as one that just offers the raw possibility of feeling emotional for another human being.

Damballah Wedo is married to Ayida. Infact, he is married to another loa as well - Erzulie Freda [who also has another couple of husbands]. This loa hangs in a tree. The tree is shown as a crossroads and Damballah Wedo is perfectly still. In his stillness, he is contemplation, thought, meditation and consideration. Unlike the fire-dragon Damballah la Falmbeau, he does not just take action; he thinks about it, and it is that thinking point we see him at in the card. He might be making a careful decision. He might be receiving a moment of inspiration.
In the 'ones', we have a feeling of purity running through the four. And in Damballah Wedo, this fits with his personality. Damballah Wedo likes things to be clean and tidy. He does not like cigarette tobacco or alcohol. He doesn't like cursing. He does not like blood. His colour is snow white. And in this, we can connect to the pure and shiny image of the sword that we have referred to in other decks. Mixed with air, we have clarity of the mind. A stillness that omits confusion or self-doubt.

Finally, we look into Santeria at our 'Ace of Earth', Oludumare. Oludumare is a physical spirit, and his creation, unlike the outpouring of emotion, a clear thought or a brash movement, is a real-life birth. Oludumare, in Santeria, gives birth to a spirit known for it's purity and peace, called Obatala.

In the picture, we see that the spirit is constructed by three tears. These tears are linked to the sorrow of a previous creation that went wrong. But here, they still create the intended. In a way, you could look at Oludumare [the eye] as a parent, giving birth to a child, as the three tears [like sperms] fertilise the egg-like ball. This is a physical manifestation. It would not be silly to have this card predict conception and pregnancy, perhaps in readings.

I like this card a lot. It brings out both the upright and reversed interpretations in one image. We can understand the beauty of creation, and regret of loss, all in one go. The eyes bring life through the tears, but also mourns death as well. Generally, I would say, this is a good card though, because in it's purest essense, all it does is create. And in that, it gives us an opportunity to create with it. To make something from something else. To use money as an investment, perhaps. To bring love to life.

I have typed my notes here for a few reasons. Firstly, I find the book that goes with this deck can often be a little confusing for me at times, so I have moulded what I have found in there with information from other resources and my own 'simple' ideas. And looking at the 'four' has made this process 'a lot' easier. I can see how the four spirits are all so alike but also having their own unique energy. From this little study [even though it is simplistic in itself], I think I will be able to read these four cards a lot better than I have been able to previously.

I was hoping that it might either provoke some discussion here or people can let me know whether they think I have a good handle on the cards or not. I appreciate all comments. And if it helps anyone else, that is great too.

All the best, Steve

Hi there
I spotted this tribe and thought I would add my 2c
I met Sallie when I was in New Orleans last and apparently she wasnt happy at all with the book that came out with the cards... If you want to get the real full on Sallie version, she sells a book seperately from the cards which you can get directly from her. http://www.feyvodou.com/
It is far, far superior to the book that comes with the cards and I highly reccomend it to anyone who is interested in this oracle and the Vodou tradtion. For the record- Sallie rocks.

Punk Rock Yoga--Back in NYC-a gumbo of influences

For those of you who don't know-

I teach yoga in NYC. One of the classes I teach is called Punk Rock Yoga-
it's not exactly what it sounds like-we do have live music a lot of times, sometimes punk, sometimes, more traditional, sometimes jazz-whatever, but it is a really fun class, very open-minded, and very accepting of everyone who takes the brave step of coming to see what it is for themselves.

As someone who also works with and serves the lwa in my own way, it can be interesting to see how yoga and vodou coalesce and combine in my teaching-Sallie, for those of you who don't know her, is also a devout yogi who uses a lot of yogic techniques in her ceremonies in New Orleans---anyway, I would love to see any of you nyc people in class-

Beginning May 9, class will be every Wed night doors open at 6:30, class at 6:45pm
Cost is $10
location is Champions Dance Studio
257 W. 39th Street (14th Floor)

Please come and add your prana (ashe) to our group---Let's see what kind of change we can create for the ourselves, NYC, and the world!

xo

A have a story on this card. Last night I was moving my eggun altar to a different locate of my home. My New Orlean cards where all face down in the old area. When I went to get them to move them to the new locate, there was a card lay upwards and facing me and it was La Siren. So I put her face up on the eggun altar and plan to make a offering to her. Does any one here can tell me more on what that card means? Seven

I have been using this deck almost exclusivly since it first came out. I wanted some input on the Shi Shi lo Dangbe card, in my readings it
seems to almost always come up in regards to the spiritual side of male homosexuality. Do any of you have any similar exchanges? She follows me around in readings for certain periods of time, but is seemingly vauge with my direct questioning on said subject. Any input would be appreciated. Travis Moon

I am santero initiated to Obatala.......I have recently felt drawn to voodoo....It was revealed in a recent reading by Ochun that I have a spirit close to me that has to do with voodoo and divination through cards........I was wondering if anyone could refer to me someone in this religion that I could discuss this matter with.

Thank you for any assistance

I purchased this deck a longgg time ago.
I really dig the voodoo art.

I met a voodoo man at the sherman oaks, ca psychic eye who is friends with the lady who made the cards. He said she was coming to town for some kinda special something, ritual, in the spring.

Why do you guys like the deck?

i was thinking we should start at the beginning and the deck and go card by card, and sort of discuss, and share thoughts and inspirations about the cards.

i sort of posted a little thing about the world egg card a while ago....

if anyone would like to add their thoughts to that it would be fantastic.

just wanted to say hi, glad you joined the tribe, and hope we can have an interesting discussion about this deck. maybe first we can all introduce ourselves--

i'll go first

i'm brian, an actor/writer/performer/director, and alas, waiter, in manhattan. i grew up in alabama, and was "raised" by my grandmother's housekeeper and cook, helen, who also brought up my mother. she never described herself as a rootworker, but looking back, that's what she was. and the things she did never seemed odd or even magical to me, just everyday occurrences. she is a cherished friend to this day, and she always encouraged me to find my own spiritual path.

i came upon the novt in a store in alabama, and pestered my mom for it for christmas, only realizing after i got it that it was designed by ms. glassman, who i had recently met in new orleans.

i've had it for nearly ten years, and continue to be amazed, intrigued, and enlightened by it, and hope to share insights i may have learned and hear about everyone's experiences with the deck.
